We’re standing up for Democracy

The Government has indicated it is prepared to cancel local elections again this year if they are judged to interfere with its proposals to reorganise local councils.

County Council elections were already postponed last year — a move supported by Labour and Conservative councillors — and have not been contested since 2021. They were scheduled to take place this year on 7 May, alongside elections for one-third of Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council seats, last contested in 2022.

The Liberal Democrats opposed last year’s postponement and are urging the Government to allow residents to choose who represents them in elections this year.
