Tackling the Pothole Plague

Potholes are a major problem throughout Basingstoke every winter, but the condition of Sullivan Road was particularly bad this year.

Hampshire County Council, which is responsible for maintaining our roads, had marked up the potholes but was failing to fix them. To make matters worse, the County Council had arranged for road markings to be repainted outside Chalk Ridge school – but some of these new lines were painted into potholes because the road surface was in such poor shape.

Cllr Andrea Bowes said: “We decided to encourage Hampshire County Council to fix the potholes by publicly pointing out its failings on our social media feeds. This seemed to do the trick, as the worst potholes were repaired a few days later – although the County Council’s tardiness made it on the ITV and BBC news!”
